3 Key Strategies for Website Visibility


So you’ve nailed your website’s visual design, offers, branding but not much is happening on the traffic front? That’s common; a large number of businesses still struggle to attract enough online visitors or keep consistent traffic even after a good number of years.

Now, before you throw in the towel or resign yourself to keeping that website only for its good looks, let’s consider some strategies that could drastically increase the number of visitors you get. Time to roll up your sleeves and get this ball rolling!

The Nuts and Bolts: Keywords

Let’s start with the most basic and essential strategy you need to get right: having enough of the right kind of keywords. These ensure that search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo will easily find you and get you in front of your target audience (aka improve your search rankings).

How do you know which keywords to use, though? Here are three ways I recommend you try:

  • Keyword generators like Google Keyword PlannerChrome’s Keyword Generator extensionUbersuggest, or Moz
  • Word cluster analysis tools like Jason Davis Word Cloud GeneratorWordart.comTag Crowd, or Tagxedo – these help you find the most common words and phrases used on websites similar to yours
  • Spy on your competitors by right-clicking on their website and then viewing their page source (the HTML code behind the page). On there, you can search for “keywords” as well as look at their title and meta description (CTRL+F to search on Windows or Command+F to search on iOS). Don’t just stop at their website though; you can use the same strategy on their YouTube pages, as well as look at the hashtags on their social media accounts. 

Build a Content Marketing Machine

Assuming you’ve done strategy 1 above, what are you going to do with all those keywords? You shouldn’t try to cram them all in the content you already have. This is where creating more blog posts (or starting a blog if you don’t already have one) comes in.

A blog can do more than simply host your keywords and increase visibility. It can attest to your knowledge and authority in your field, as well as open opportunities for additional passive income. However, one of the first and most common worries that comes up when starting or maintaining a blog is how to find new topics to address. Well, we have a few recommendations in this arena, as well:

  • Research frequent topics on Quora and industry/niche forums
  • Look through the Best-Selling books in your industry
  • Use Google’s autocomplete suggestions that come up when you start typing in its search box
  • Check Google’s “People Also Ask” section which keeps expanding every time you click on the dropdown arrow to the right of each question
  • – a website that gives you all the searches people have made relating to any keyword you type in
  • BuzzSumo – a content curator that allows you to not only find viral content among all social media channels, but also get data and statistics about it

More than Meets the Eye – Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 

Most people believe that SEO is all about keywords. However, those are only part of the picture. While they may constitute a large piece of the puzzle, other SEO strategies are also important.

Another SEO strategy is backlinks. Backlinks are simply other posts, blogs, articles, or websites that direct their viewers to your URL. Just like blogs, these serve for improving both your search rankings and your credibility.

So how can you get more backlinks? The following suggestions are the ones we’ve found to have the most success:

  • Encouraging others to share your content/blog articles if they found them useful – while you may think people would instinctively do so, having a direct call-to-action (CTA) can greatly increase the number of shares AND bookmarks
  • Leave social media comments/replies (e.g. on Facebook groups or other business pages) and forum/Quora answers that include your full signature (name, title, and website)
  • Reach out to podcasters, bloggers, vloggers, and other influencers to see if they would be interested in hosting you as a guest on their channel/page or partnering up with you on some initiative where you would both share each other’s website on your respective social media accounts
  • Start an affiliate, ambassador, and/or referral program, where you reward others for mentioning you and your business on their channels. Some of the benefits you may provide could be financial (a fixed amount for every referral or a percentage of every sale coming from each affiliate link) or gifts (free products, discount coupons, etc.)

One word of caution… we strongly advise you against buying backlinks. Google’s algorithm has been improved to detect such attempts and your website could get seriously penalized for it. Make sure to check Google and Bing’s Webmaster Guidelines to review the Black Hat practices they denounce.
